I have not died

Well hello there.

It's a rainy and foggy Thursday evening in Toronto, where I currently write from the high-rise apartment where I am now residing. It's been an eventful couple of weeks to say the least: graduating from university, packing up the final shreds of my pre-adulthood life (aka the last four years), and starting the internship of a lifetime. Yes, lots is happening indeed.

So, my apologies are in order for my lack of posts. But never fear, the posts won't stop. Expect weekly posts from me and my guest bloggers, and remember, they're always a space for you in the latter category. So grab a pen and write, grab a camera and click, or just be awkward.

Coming Saturday: A slice of an awkward breakfast

Billy Bob Thornton Rivals Joaquin Phoenix in Awkward Interview with Jian Ghomeshi

And yet another guest post! Paul Sham of The Post Script fame is the latest contributor to the Blog Awkward community. Thanks for posting this Paul - this incident that happens to involve a Canadian participant was made for this blog.

What is it with awkward celebrity interviews? We've all seen Joaquin Phoenix's shaggy, incoherent interview on David Letterman. Well, here is another one. On April 8, Jian Ghomeshi, host of CBC Radio Q, interviewed the Boxmasters. Ever heard of them? Neither had I. Their claim to fame, however, is Billy Bob Thorton as their principal songwriter, singer and drummer. Oh wait, Billy Bob is that actor guy. True, but don't mention that to his face. Apparently, Billy Bob did not want questions about his acting career, which is fine since they were there to discuss the band. But, Billy Bob became grumpy when Jian's introduction mentioned his past career. Billy Bob starts the interview with being non-cooperative, moves to being nonsensical, and, finally, becomes aggressive. Jian has to literally call a truce to finish the interview. Anyways, enjoy this awkward interview with a grumpy Billy Bob.

BFF?? I hardly know you

The following is a guest post by my roommate Kat. This is just one of several posts that Kat is contributing to Blog Awkward. Expect more posts of hers soon!

It was my twentieth birthday and I was having a big party at my house. One of my good friends Kristine didn't know any of my other friends, so begged me to let her roommates come. I had only met them briefly during the previous school year, and even though I wasn't thrilled about having strangers at my birthday party, I let her invite them. So, they show up. Before you know it, they're all over me, hugging me, kissing me on the cheek, and getting in all of my pictures like they were my best friends in the world. I'm usually fairly good at hiding my unpleasant feelings towards people in order to be polite, but my distaste for this situation was VERY obvious in my expression whenever they would BFF me, as you can see in this picture: AWKWARD!

Los Angeles Times article: "In comedy's age of awkwardness, nothing makes us laugh like embarassment"

If you've taken a look at my "Awkward Moments in the World" newsreel widget within the past day or two, your eye may have caught the attention of a headline that appeared in the Los Angeles Times on Friday:

"In comedy's age of awkwardness, nothing makes us laugh like embarassment"

The article, written by Robert Lloyd, points to the recent plethora of examples of awkward scenarios showing up all over pop culture, be it on live television (Joaquin Phoenix, anyone?), or in the movies (notably Judd Apatow comedies). It starts like this:

"When the actor, former actor, future hip-hop musician, prankster and/or celebrity burnout Joaquin Phoenix appeared recently on “Late Show With David Letterman,” staring and mumbling through a spot usually devoted to cheerful self-promotion, it set off a wave of media comment and forwarded video links.

Whether you took it as an authentic psychotic break or as a guerrilla performance piece — whether it was sad and strange for real or sad and strange on purpose — the result was pretty much the same: As news, it was entertainment, and as entertainment, it was comedy, and as comedy, it was a success, of sorts."

Lloyd continues with a thorough description of "the awkward moment," complete with answers on what makes a moment awkward.

Read the article.

Guest Post brought to you by Laur Lore

While I do have my own blog, I thought this situation would fit better on Blog Awkward. Why? Because this situation is so, well, awkward. Even better, it has to do with blogging. Thanks Julie-Anne for letting me do it.

Here goes:

My friend has a blog called Towards the Unknown, and one day she wrote a post about some Jehovah’s Witnesses who came to her door:

A Jehovah's Witness rang the doorbell at my house at 10:30 a.m., while I was getting ready for the gym. I wish now I had answered it, and told them what I think of their seriously erroneous religion…Sara once got stopped on the street by two Jehovah's Witnesses, and gave them a piece of her mind. I've been dying to do that every since!

Someone random then responded:

Hello, my name is Val and, I am one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I would be happy to hear what you have to say. If you would like to let'er rip, my blog is at http://valsjw.blogspot.com/ I hope to hear from you soon.

Okay, so there’s nothing wrong with someone you don’t know writing a comment on your blog. That’s what Web 2.0 is, right?

But, when you visit Val’s blog, there’s only one post…about my friend ignoring Jehovah’s Witnesses at her door.

But wait; it gets weirder.

Some other random person, Mark Hunter, posted a ginormous comment about why Jehovah’s Witnesses is a bogus religion. Turns out Mark Hunter’s blog is called, “All About Breasts…Gail’s Journey.” It’s about someone not even named Gail going through a breast augmentation surgery.

Sorry, not done yet!

Then, someone calling themselves “the one” posted this under “Mark Hunter’s” comment:

You are very confused Mark... and that is all I am going to say to you about this. You have
clearly not taken any time to verify what, you claim here, are facts…This offer however was to a
specific person- and that person is not you.

So I guess two people ignored Jehovah’s Witnesses that day. Well, at least two people.

Oh yeah, this all started about two weeks ago, but “the one” hasn’t posted since five months ago, and they only posted three times. There’s only one thing to say here: awkward!
